Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Officers state they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then found multiple other smeared cars and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Police state initial examinations indicate the substance was most likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; authorities are currently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the event," they commented.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the public for tips.
An important official said the incident left him without words and had to be resolved quickly.
"This event affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a shooter targeting individuals of migrant background in 2020.
