Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using such drugs must be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
