The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
