Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
